Money for Harvard Masters
May 10, 2011 06:06AM
I am planning on attending Harvard for my Masters in Literature and Creative Writing but there is no financial aid for the first three pre-requisite workshops. They told me I can look for scholarships but my search is turning up dry. Can your organization help me find the funds?

I am a 31 year old Latina who returned to college for my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and I am graduating in August of 2011.

Olivia,

As a graduate student it is possible to find scholarship; however, it can be difficult. Here are some things to consider for your financial aid search:

* Go to your community and check with local big businesses to see if they offer scholarships or can sponsor you. For sponsorship, you will want to create a portfolio of your work.

* Fellowships are another source of funding. There are various types of fellowships – departmental, institutional, and others from external sources. Please take into account that most fellowships require that commit a set amount of time of research or work in exchange for the financial assistance. Go to your department and ask if they can provide you with a list. You can also conduct your own research. Use www.google.com or www.yahoo.com and use phrases, such as “fellowships for creative writing” and “fellowships for literature.”

* Start looking out for conferences in your area where you can network with others and ask them for advice on covering your education. Check with your current network groups and reach out to other graduate students to see how they were able to finance their Master’s.

I hope these steps help! Please feel free to reach out to us again if you need further advice.

Good luck!
