Financial Aid

Hello everyone,

So I applied for FAFSA and got my report back with my EFC score. I am going to a technical college and when I applied for financial aid I took my dads tax transcript. My mom is an illegal so she doesn't have a ss number or tax number and does not work. When my dad filed his taxes he filed as head of house hold and he didn't include my mom. The problem is that the lady at financial aid looked at my fafsa and noticed that I had put down my mom and my dad and that they were married. So she told me my dad will have to refile his taxes but change his status to married or filing jointly. The problem is that if we try to do that it asks for my moms ss number on the tax form. Is there any way we can include my mom but not put down a ss number for her?

You father and mother can file taxes jointly. Your mother will have to get a federal identification number also known as ITN number in order to file taxes. Your mother does not work, so she will only be included in the taxes since your parents are legally married and residing together. When the taxes are joinly filed, you will have to put 999-99-9999 in your FAFSA application as your mother's social security number.

Hope this information helps.
