We are currently looking into your situation and will provide you with information regarding emancipating yourself.

In the meantime, I would encourage you to get in contact directly with a FAFSA representative. There are three ways to get in touch with a FAFSA representative (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/contact.htm).

[*] Online Chat Session - representatives are available Monday through Friday (8:00am-11:59pm Eastern Time) and Saturday (9:00am-6:00pm Eastern Time)

[*] Phone - 1‑800‑4‑FED‑AID (1‑800‑433‑3243) or 319‑337‑5665. If you are hearing impaired call the TTY line at 1‑800‑730‑8913.

[*] E-mail at FederalStudentAidCustomerService@ed.gov

Also, please read the response provided by FAFSA regarding parent(s) who is undocumented:

If your parent does not have a Social Security number (SSN), they must enter 000.00.0000 on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If they also filed taxes, select that they filed a Foreign Tax Return, even if they did not. This is the way the system will allow you to continue.

If you have other questions about financial aid, application procedures, eligibility formulas or other student aid topics, please contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or 319-337-5665 between 8:00am and midnight, Monday through Friday and 9:00am to 6:00pmSaturday Eastern Time. You may also e-mail general questions about financial aid by clicking on the "Contact Us" link at our Web site (http://www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov) if you have further questions.

Thank you for your patience!

The reason why you were able to obtain your lawful permanent residence is because your mother married your step-dad before your 18th birthday. Your permanent residence is based on the fact that there is a bona fide marriage relationship between your step-dad and your mom. Emancipation will not cut the required ties to obtain the permanent residence. However, I don't think emancipating yourself is the solution because you can still obtain financial help. You just have to follow certain steps when filling out your FAFSA application. If your mother does not have a social security number, you have to put 000-00-0000 but if you mother has a federal identification number then make sure to put 999-99-9999. When you have to remove the condition on your residence, you must demonstrate that your step-father and mother continued to reside as husband and wife.

Take care and good luck,
