Financial Aid for Documented Students but Undocumented parents

Posted by Aly
i applied for FAFSA and got aid the first semester that i went to college but when it came to get money for my second semester the people who work in the financial aid office at my school told me that they couldn't process the application to get aid for that semester because my mother is undocumented. My question is why was i able to get it for one semester but not the other if it was in the same year. and is there anything that i can do?
THE SAME THING HAPPEND TO ME IN NEW JERSEY... I GOT STATE AID FOR ONE YEAR BUT THE NEXT YEAR I COULD NOT QUALIFY FOR ANY STATE AID BECAUSE OF MY PARENTS LEGAL STATUS..

Dear Aly and Alex:

This is something that you need to bring up again with your financial aid office considering that you do qualify since you both are citizens. The status of your parents CANNOT affect your chances.

I would contact FAFSA directly

Also, please note the following information provided by FAFSA:

If your parent does not have a Social Security number (SSN), they must enter 000.00.0000 on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If they also filed taxes, select that they filed a Foreign Tax Return, even if they did not. This is the way the system will allow you to continue.

Finally, get in contact with the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) at www.aclu.org . ACLU was looking into cases and suing New Jersey.
