Individual Taxpayer Identification Number?

Most scholarships require the need for a social security number.
I am not a leegal citizen of the US.On my Individual income tax return there is a number for my name labeled as a social security number.
I found later that this was known as an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
My question is, could my ITIN number be used the same way as a social security number?
I hope that someone can answer my question it would, be greatly appreciated

Dear Javier,

Whenever you are applying for scholarships, leave the social security box blank. You should not include your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

I hope this helps.
