Mentorship programs?
February 02, 2011 04:22PM
I work for a large company and I realize that there are almost no Latinos in senior positions. I think they could use a mentorship program but I don't know where to point them to. On the one hand, it would be good if the senior people could mentor us Latinos in junior positions but on the other hand, maybe there's a way of doing that through social networking. Any ideas guys?

Hi JJ,

A mentorship program does not necessarily have to be a formal program. I also work for a large company and we have a very informal program.

Basically, it is encouraged to find a mentor within the company. Any employee can simply ask a senior leader in the company if they would be their mentor. I've never heard of anyone saying "no" to this request. Sometimes, senior employees will offer to mentor an junior level employee who they feel has good potential. So it works both ways.

Perhaps you can start by asking someone to be your mentor and encouraging your co-workers to do the same. Another way may be to contact human resources or your corporate communications team to see if there have been other requests and if they could assist you in establishing a program.

Best of luck!
