Choosing majors
December 13, 2010 08:19PM
So I have been having a hard time choosing majors that it has come to the point where thats all i think about, which freaks me out. I feel like the major that I want to do is communications because I want to be a public relations specialist or a do something with media, but the college that I am attending does not have that major. For me to transfer would be a bit difficult especially because my GPA is not above 3.0 and because I am a sophomore already. This year I have been working real hard towards raising GPA. What do you do in a situation like this?

Hi Ana,

I replied to this question in the "choose schools" forum (the one listed below this). Please check there and let us know if you have other questions.

Thanks!

What happens if you don't know what you want to major in? I like lots of different things: biology, sociology, business, communications. I don't know how to make this decision! Can someone please help me?

Hi Kelly,

Many students enter college with a major of "undecided" and many also switch majors while they are in school (I did). It's definitely a good idea to research all your options. First, I would make an appointment with your guidance counselor. Talk with them about all the majors, minors, and concentrations available. There might be a way to combine a couple of your interests or even maybe create a major. They will also answer your questions about deadlines to choose a major or what happens if you want to switch majors down the road.

You can also talk to some professors or professionals who work in the fields you are interested in. Get some more information on what their majors were or what work/internship experience they have. This will help guide your decisions and help you figure out if these majors/careers are really something you would like to do.

In short, don't stress! Make sure to do some research, ask some questions, and do what works best for you.

Best,
Amber George
