Where can I find a mentor

My family doesn't know much about college and I desperately want to go. Where can I find a mentor to guide me through this? I'm getting the book from Amazon but I need a real person who lives near me. Where shuold I start looking?

Hi Hector,

Fortunately, there are many potential mentors out there! You may want to start by going up to a teacher who you trust and who can start giving you some guidance on the college application process. If you plan on studying to become a doctor, you may want to approach your own doctor to see if they could become your mentor. If you are interested in obtaining a degree in Fine Arts, you may want to find a local artist who can provide you with advice. Look around your own community and search for professionals and leaders who you can approach. The goal is to find some one who is already working within your area of interest and who you feel comfortable talking to about your goals.

There are also some organizations who you may want to turn to for mentorship. Some provide programs for high school students and give guidance in regards to the college process. You may want to visit some of the following:

Hispanic Heritage Foundation (www.hispanicheritage.org)
Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE, www.hace-usa.org)
INROADS (www.inroads.org)

If you have any more questions, please let us know!

Good luck!

Jazmin

Hector,
Another great resource is contacting the Office for Multicultural Affairs (or diversity of affairs) of a local college. They are really great with getting you in contact with Latino and non-Latino college students that are willing to share their experiences with you. Many college students are very mature and very knowledgeable about the college application process.

It's so great to see you on this forum! Keep up the awesome mentality. I was in a similar situation as you not too long ago.

I had a mentor a couple of years ago who helped me choose a good college and then with the applications. Now I'm a junior at Fordham University in NY and would like to find a mentor to help me get an internship for next year and start getting more informed about the job market here. Where could I find one? Is it worth it to join one of the professional organizaitons? I'm majoring in business.
Thanks!

Helen,

It is definitely worth joining a professional organization! Not only will this allow you to network and meet new people in your area of career interest, but they may possibly offer mentoring services where you can be paired up with a mentor. This would be a great place for you to start. You could also go to your program's department to see if they offer any alumnae/mentoring services.

You can also go to our "Resources" page and click on "MENTORING PROGRAMS" to see other options.

Good luck!
