Hello dear people,
I am not Latino, I'm a Turkish guy, but I have many Latino students and I have a question. If you have no papers how can you apply for scholarships? Are there restrictions to apply to any college? I appreciate your time and response. Thank you.

Kenan,

There is no restriction as to what colleges you can apply to. You need to give yourself enough time to research scholarships that are open to students who are not documented. Here are some things to take into consideration:

1) There are nine states who allow in-state tuition for undocumented students; however, you must check their requirements because each one differs. Most require that you attend a certain numbers of years in high school within that state. These states are the following: California, Illinois, Kansas, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Washington.

2) Public universities or state colleges should not ask for proof of your citizenship or immigration status. They are not required to report undocumented students. You are allowed to leave the SSN space on the application blank.

3) Private colleges DO NOT receive federal funding, therefore, they are able to accept and give financial aid to undocumented students (depending on the school’s policy). Students interested in private universities should speak to the Admissions Office about their status.

4) While you are not able to apply to general scholarships, you should consider applying to private scholarships. Many of these private scholarships award undocumented students money (however they do not make this publicly known). When filling out the application, leave the "Social Security" box or line blank.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Emeli,

Can you provide us with a little more information on your situation? Are you also a student that does not have citizenship?

Thank you,

- Jazmin
