My mom said she saw Mariela Dabbah and Elsie Vazquez from this website on TV today and they were talking about undocumented sudents which I am. I didn't get to hear the show but was wonderign if they said anythingn about undocuemnted students having to fill out the FAFSA or not. I'm not clear if I qualify for it or not. I'm in NJ since I was 5 years old. Thanks!

John,

Unfortunately, undocumented students are not able to apply for FAFSA since this is federal funding. However, you should continue to look into scholarship opportunities. While majority of scholarships require students to have citizenship, there are a few who will award undocumented students. In this case, if they ask for your social security number, you would leave it blank.

Also, take into consideration that private universities do not receive federal funding; therefore, they are not being overseen on where to use their funds. Private universities are able to provide funding opportunities to undocumented students.
Please check out our “paying for school” section - [www.latinosincollege.com]. You should check out each link under “Scholarships and Financial Aid” and “Unconventional Ways to Pay for College.”

Finally, check out Dr. Paz Maya Olivérez’s blog on undocumented students. [drpazmayaoliverezforlatinosincollege.blogspot.com]

Please feel free to ask us more questions.

Good luck!

However, even if your unqualified for federal financial aid, you can still qualify for state financial aid. I'm also in your position so I've done a good bit of research on this. Unfortunately not all states provide aid to undocumented students. I think only about 10 do.
