Cybervisits to colleges

Most colleges offer online tours of their campuses. There are so many schools that I´m considering andI can´t afford to visit all of them that I was thinking if I shoudl take the online tour seriously. Does anyone know if you can trust them to really show what the campus is like? Anyone can share the experience of how much you can get a sense of the real thing through the online tour? I´m afraid of making a decision based on something that´s not really accurate.

Hi Valentina,

Online tours are definitely the next best thing to an in-person campus visit. When you're interested in a lot of schools and short on time and travel funds, these online tours are a great option.

Most of the online video tours are done by the schools themselves so they may be a bit bias. However, they usually offer enough views and photos of campus, interviews, information, etc. to give you a good picture of the school. At the very least, the videos can help you at least narrow down your search to a few schools.

A good way to make sure you are getting a well-rounded picture of the campus is to connect with a current student or recent alumni. Contact the admissions office of each school and ask if they have any student representatives that you can email or call. I was a student representative in undergrad and corresponded with a many high school students who were unable to make the trip in person. I also did this as a recent alumni after I finished my MBA. This is a good way to see what a real day in the life of a student is like and what they like/dislike about the school. You can also ask if they have professors available to talk to you as well.

I hope this information helps in your search!

Best,
