Taking care of my baby and studying
April 10, 2011 02:34PM
Unfortunately i got pregnant as a freshman and I now have a one year old. I'm struggling with school (i live with my parents) and taking care of my baby. Even though my parenths help, they want me to take responsibility and do my duty as a mothr. I understand but it's so hard to keep my schedule in school and my grades. I was thinking that may be I should take a couple of years off until my son can go to a preK and then finish my degree. What do you think?

Hi Alex,

It's great that you are focused on both being a good mom and your education. Both are very important now and for your future, but both also require a lot of time and effort. It is important that you do what is best for you and your family.

If you feel that you are unable to devote the time and energy necessary to both, you should consider some options. Perhaps you can explain to your parents that with a little bit more help from them, you can complete your degree and be able to better support yourself and your child. Their extra help would be temporary; to allow you to focus more on school. You could also cut back on the classes you are taking. Maybe only take one class per term so you can focus more attention on your family and only one subject at a time. Are there any other moms in your classes? You could look at forming a study group with these moms or take turns babysitting each others kids so you can have some quiet study time.

While it is not always ideal to take some time off, it may be necessary. It is often harder to go back once you do take time off, so you must make sure to stay focused and stay involved as much as possible. It is absolutely important that you do finish school for both your future and your child's future.

I'm sure that you will be able to make it all work for you. If you have further questions, please let us know.

Best,
Amber George
