'Announcement of Summer Student Fellowships - May 23-July 29, 2010',

'The Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) is a paid summer fellowship designed to foster the entrance of talented students from diverse backgrounds within the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts into graduate school and faculty positions in U.S. colleges and universities.',

'More broadly, the program seeks to increase the presence of minorities and others who demonstrate a commitment to eradicating racial disparities in graduate school and eventually in academic ranks. The program serves the related goals of providing role models for all youth and structuring campus environments so that they will be more conducive to improved racial and ethnic relations. MURAP aims to achieve its mission by identifying and supporting students of great promise and helping them to become scholars of the highest distinction.

Each summer, the program brings a cohort of 18-22 undergraduates (rising juniors and seniors) from colleges and universities in the U.S. to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus for an intensive, ten-week research experience. Students are expected to develop a 20-page research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor with whom they are paired according to areas of study and research interests. In addition to meeting at least three times a week with faculty mentors, students will attend weekly 3-hour seminars where they will present their research and discuss it with faculty and other students in the program, receive required biweekly instruction in preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), attend biweekly writing and presentation skills workshops, and participate in a variety of informative workshops, social events and conferences designed to expose them to the graduate experience. Participants will submit their final research paper based on their project and must receive approval through the signature of their faculty mentor. For a student to complete the program successfully and receive the entire stipend, participation in all of these activities and completion of the research paper are required. A sample calendar of required activities and deadlines is available on our website.

For their participation in the program, student fellows will receive a generous stipend of $3500 (in the case of students holding Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowships, they receive the difference between their summer stipend and MURAP\'s), an allowance for meals of $1450 and travel allowance up to $500 to cover the cost of transportation to and from Chapel Hill. Additionally, students will be provided on-campus housing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.'

'

"Be The Change."
Young people make up the soul of The NOLA Tree. They are the common thread that runs through all of our initiatives. Without question, the success of The NOLA Tree lies with our young volunteers.
But what makes The NOLA Tree different from already established volunteer organizations? Are we not just another volunteer placement group? Why would participants choose to get involved?
We have identified six general areas that help set The NOLA Tree apart from other service organizations and programs. Our commitment to these areas and their underlying core values are at the heart of our mission.

1. Group Travel.

At The NOLA Tree, we strive to create a community within a community. Because we require our volunteers to travel as a group, live communally, and work alongside one another, most experiences with The NOLA Tree are shared learning ones. This helps to foster a greater sense of cohesion and unity among our participants. We find this approach also enhances the safety of our young people; volunteers are more apt to look out for one another when such bonds are formed.

2. Age of Participants.

In the four years since Hurricane Katrina, hundreds of thousands of volunteers have descended upon New Orleans and the Gulf Coast of the United States to aid in the recovery effort. These volunteers have provided an invaluable service.

However, in recent months, many relief and recovery organizations in the region have begun to impose minimum age requirements on volunteers. Some groups have even started charging administrative fees for volunteers, particularly younger ones. Too often, volunteers have been arriving without a clear understanding of what it means to be a volunteer. As a result, their presence hasn’t provided much-needed assistance, but instead created hindrances and impediments. In addition, more and more volunteers base camps, community centers, hostels and other housing facilities no longer permit underage volunteers to stay at their facilities (unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian).

Because of the relationships we have established and nurtured with lowernine.org, Operation Nehemiah and other organizations in the New Orleans area, young volunteers with The NOLA Tree remain welcome. Even though we allow our participants to be as young as fifteen (15) years of age, the organizations we work with know our volunteers are held to an extremely high standard. Our participants must attend a volunteer orientation and participate in training workshops. We expect the volunteers with The NOLA Tree to be the role models for other volunteers. And they are.'

Boone, Ph.D.:

Greetings, I wanted to let you know about a great opportunity here at Wake Forest where you can get a FREE education and get PAID while you\'re doing it. Our Dean of the Schools of Business is the former CEO of PepsiCo and very committed to diversity. He\'s gone around to his CEO friends, who have agreed to donate a bunch of money to pay tuition and fees, provide a stipend, and a job, to diverse students. The details are below. The problem is, response to the program has been dismal! As a faculty member, I would be embarrassed for him to have to tell his CEO friends, "thanks so much for your donation, but unfortunately I have to give it back because we couldn\'t find Any students who wanted it." So, I need your help. Please contact me if you, or ANYONE you know is interested in the program. I want to help out as many young scholars as I can. Don\'t worry about whether or not you (or they) have taken the GMAT, etc. All you need to do at this point is JUST APPLY.

About the Program: The Master of Art in Management program is designed specifically for liberal arts majors only. The MA degree program is a 10 month intense study of the basic functional areas of Business. After graduation and working for approximately two years, all MA graduates are eligible to apply to Wake Forest as part of the MA/MBA joint degree program and get the MBA in one year. The new Dean, Steve Reinemund, has created a new scholarship for diverse students pursuing the MA degree called the Corporate Fellowship.

The Corporate Fellowship provides full tuition and a $21,000 stipend to cover living expenses. Additionally, each Corporate Fellow will participate in a practicum. The practicum has two components, educational and professional development. Each student will be assigned a mentor that is a high level executive with their sponsor corporation.
The mentor will oversee an educational project covering 4 of the functional areas of business u sing their own corporation as the subject.
The student will visit the corporation 3 - 4 times during the program to present his/her results of their research project. Additionally, the "professional development" component of the fellowship provides career coaching and leadership development for the students.

The goal for the corporation is to be able to groom and hopefully, hire a top candidate from a diverse background for their organization. Of course, there is no obligation that the students accept any offer of employment.. Still, the student benefits, even if they are not ultimately hired by their sponsor corporation in that they have the MA degree and the type of experience that will make them more marketable.'

'USNH Partners with ISE to offer Three Annual Scholarships',

'Dec. 3, 2008',

'A new cooperative effort between the University System of New Hampshire (USNH) and the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) will enable three students attending a USNH college or university to traverse the globe with the Semester at Sea program on a full scholarship.',

'
ISE will support annual scholarships for one student from the University of New Hampshire, one student from Plymouth State University, and one student from Keene State College, for a total of three scholarships per year. Eligible students will be New Hampshire residents that pay in-state tuition, are enrolled full time, are juniors or seniors, and who qualify for a USNH Affordable College Effort (ACE) Award based on income and enrollment criteria.

"We are delighted to be a part of this effort with the University System of New Hampshire to make the Semester at Sea academic experience a reality for all qualifying participants," said Les McCabe, president of ISE/SAS.

The first three scholarships will be awarded for the fall 2009 semester. Interested students must be ACE-eligible, have completed at least one full year of academic work, meet certain educational criteria, and have an interest in global issues. Beyond the financial requirements, ACE-eligible students must be New Hampshire residents attending a USNH institution full time.

In addition, students who receive the scholarship will also receive a $2,000 award from the New Hampshire International Trade Resource Center to help cover the costs of travel to and from the ship and at the various ports of call, passport and visa costs, and expenses related to books and learning materials. These additional funds will enable the participants to take better advantage of this international learning experience.

The ACE Awards were established in late 2005 to assist New Hampshire residents attending a residential USNH institution as a full-time freshman within one year of graduating from high school and for which the expected family contribution (EFC) is under $1,000. Combined with other grants and college work study funds, the direct cost to attend-which includes standard tuition, fees, room, and board-will be fully met. The program was expanded to eligible students in their sophomore year in 2007 and eligible juniors in 2008. About 200 students currently receive the awards, and this number is expected to increase once the third year of eligibility is added for students attending this fall.

"This is an invaluable and life-changing opportunity for students who typically could not take advantage of a semester abroad, let alone the Semester at Sea program," said USNH Chancellor Stephen Reno. "I\'m very excited that ISE is offering these scholarships and look forward to hearing first-hand about the learning experiences our students will have during this educational journey."

ISE awards $2.6 million in financial aid annually. Last year\'s ACE Awards averaged about $5,500 for the year, or $2,750 a semester. The ISE scholarships range from $8,000-10,000 per student, depending on which USNH institution they are attending.'
